GUILFORD, CT —Home composting is one of the most important things you can do to reduce waste in our landfills, mitigate climate change and save money for your family and the town, Sustainable Guilford Task Force Chairperson Terri Cain says.
In Connecticut, around 40 percent of what ends up in our trash is organic material, Cain, a Connecticut Master Composter and co-founder of Guilford Community Garden, says.
“We throw away more than 500,000 tons of food waste each year that could be composted instead. And that compost is a valuable resource,” Cain says.

And, composting in yards and gardens “will enrich your soil by adding nutrients, strengthen plants to help resist diseases, help the soil retain moisture, and boost the productivity of your landscape, whether you are growing flowers or food.”
Composting is easy, educational and fun for the whole family! Learn how to compost by watching Cain’s “Dive Into Compost” video here or on the town's YouTube channel as seen below.
