Hartford Rotary To Hear Expert On Landmine Removal Feb. 15th
Sol Black of U.S. Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement will discuss efforts at demining and weapons removal at Monday's open Zoom meeting

The Rotary Club of Hartford extends an invitation to all interested persons to hear Sol Black, branch chief of the Department of State's Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement, discuss U.S.-funded demining activities in global hotspots at its Monday, February 15th, meeting via Zoom.
The Zoom meeting will be held on Monday, February 15th at 12:15pm
Black oversees U.S.-funded demining activities in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East within the Department of State’s Bureau of Political-Military Affairs.

He will share his fascinating work and stories on the U.S. government's role in demining lands across the globe that have been contaminated with landmines and other dangerous explosive hazards.
Landmines are a danger to civilians even after conflict subsides in war-torn areas. "Most land mines that menace civilians are “dumb” or persistent, meaning they are built with mechanical fuses and are triggered by the victim with no other safeguards," according to a February, 2020 story in The Washington Post. "They can remain dangerous indefinitely until someone — commonly a child or farmer — encounters one in the dirt."
