The helicopter landed at Andover Plaza, which is at 144 Route 6.

Personnel in the state police public information office confirmed in an email this morning that the accident was fatal.

They wrote that identities were not being released yet because personnel hadn’t signed off on the press release.

Andover firefighters at the scene deferred comment to state police.

The state police accident reconstruction team responded to the accident.

According to the CT DOT Twitter feed, as reported at 1:58 p.m., Route 6 was closed at Hutchinson Road in connection with the accident.

It is unclear how long the road was closed.

The accident caused a significant traffic backup.

Andover Mini Mart owner Ramnik Mavani said he heard a sound “like a blast” and saw smoke coming from the accident scene.

Grace Cesana, 15, who lives on nearby Aspinall Drive, said she heard a “very loud bang.”

“I just thought it was my screen door slamming shut because of the wind,” she said.

While there have been many accidents on the highway, which has been nicknamed “Suicide Six” over the years, Cesana said she had never seen an accident as bad as the one Monday afternoon.

Mutual aid departments responded to assist Andover firefighters at the scene, including Bolton and Columbia fire departments.

Ambulances from Ambul-ance Service of Manchester and the town of Andover responded, as well as state police.
