UConn Swimmer Carries Country Flag in Olympic Opening Ceremony

Rising sophomore Chinyere Pigot is one of many current and former UConn athletes to compete at the 2012 games, but was the only one to lead her fellow athletes from the small country of Suriname into the London Olympic Stadium Friday night.

The world was introduced to one of UConn's own Friday when Chinyere Pigot walked into the Olympic Stadium in front of thousands during the Parade of Nations carrying the Surinamese flag.

Pigot, a champion swimmer and rising sophomore, will compete in the women's freestyle swimming representing her home country of Suriname in an event where she's earned top recognition as an All-Big East athlete for her performance, according to her athletic profile on the UConn Husky website.

Pigot is currently a resident of Miami, FL, where she lives with her mother and brothers, one of which, Diguan, will join her at the Olympic game as swimmer competing in the 100-meter breaststroke and at UConn next year, also representing Suriname, according to the Miami Herald.
