Weapons Stash Seized In Raid Near UConn

STORRS, CT — A raid at a home near the University of Connecticut Wednesday led to authorities confiscating an arsenal of guns, ammunition and materials that could be turned into explosives, state police said.

At about 3 p.m. Wednesday, detectives from the Connecticut State Police Statewide Narcotics Task Force's east office executed a search warrant in the area of 88 Hillyndale Road near the UConn campus. The target of the search warrant was 32-year-old Scott Barber, his vehicle and his residence with authorities seeking firearms, narcotics and "other related items," state police said.

Involved in the search were the State Police Emergency Services unit, state and FBI bomb squads, the Statewide Organized Crime Investigative Task Force, the Eastern District Major Crime Squad and the Mansfield Resident Trooper’s Office.

The warrant was executed while Barber was returning to the residence and authorities seized chemicals and "precursors to produce energetic materials," two guns (one of which located by firearms detection dog Darlene), two high capacity magazines, .223-cal. rifle ammunition, shotgun ammunition, a bulletproof vest, five marijuana plants in various stages of growth and narcotic pills, state police said.

Barber whom state police said is a convicted felon, was arrested on firearms, explosives and drug-related charges, state police said.

He was held on a $500,000 surety bond and was to appear in Rockville Superior Court on Thursday.
