Meriden City Council Welcomes New Council Member Chad Cardillo City Council Member Sonya Jelks Becomes First Female Majority Leader

MERIDEN- On Monday, May 3, 2021, Majority Leader David Lowell tendered his resignation as Councilman from the City of Meriden. Lowell has been a valuable and dedicated public voice for the City of Meriden for over six years. Lowell began his role as council member in 2013. His resignation comes in advance of his term of office in November 2021.  He tendered his resignation to take time to focus on his family matters and commitments. The newly appointed member filling his vacancy is fellow Democrat and Maloney social studies teacher, Chad Cardillo.

Lowell’s departure brings new movement and roles to the current members on council. Sonya Jelks, deputy majority leader, has now taken on the role of Majority Leader. This historic moment marks the first time a female will hold the role of Majority Leader for the City of Meriden. Councilman Michael Rohde will become the Economic Development Chair spearheading further growth and development within Meriden. In addition, Councilwomen Yvette Cortez will take the role of Finance Chair for Meriden.

“It is my honor and a privilege to have earned the respect of my colleagues to assume the leadership role of Majority Leader for the City of Meriden City Council,” said Sonya Jelks. “This is an exciting opportunity for me as I have grown as a council member and community leader, but I am also proud of the milestone of becoming the first woman and person of color to serve in this role in Meriden. I am ready to lead and serve this community to the best of my ability and I look forward to collaborating with my council colleagues to continue to contribute to the legacy of progressive growth and the prosperity of our beautiful city.

“I am honored and delighted to take on the Chairmanship of the Meriden City Council Economic Development Committee,” said Councilman Michael Rohde. “Meriden is well-poised for downtown growth and vitality along with other potential sites. I plan to work tirelessly with our committee, and a host of other key influencers, to prioritize our objectives and execute a plan for success. Meriden’s time is now.”
