Former Meriden Wrestling Coach Charged With Assault

A former Meriden high school wrestling coach has been charged after police said he had a relationship with a 16-year-old team member.

MERIDEN, CT — A former Meriden High School assistant wrestling coach has been charged on accusations that he had a relationship with a 16-year-old team member, according to The Meriden Record Journal. Joel Torres, 23, of 30 Griswold St., was charged with five counts each of second-degree and fourth-degree sexual assault.

The alleged relationship occurred last year and police began investigating after the student's mother made a complaint.

Torres was a student teacher at Platt High School in the fall 2019 semester and an assistant wrestling coach at Maloney High School for the 2019-2020 season.
