UPDATE: Man Dies In Accident On Naugy-Beacon Falls Line

Police have identified the man who died in a car accident Thursday.

A man who died in a car accident in Beacon Falls near the Naugatuck line Thursday has been identified by state police as Robert Baker, 66, of Waterbury.

Baker, of 90 Mohican Ave., was driving a blue, 199 Pontiac Grand Prix on Beacon Valley Road when another driver saw him slumping over the wheel and swerving all over the road about 10:40 a.m., according to a police report.

Baker's car then struck the other vehicle, a 1996 Mercury Marquis, then hit an embankment and flipped over, the report states. Butler was pronounced dead on the scene by EMTs from Beacon Falls.

The owner and driver of the Mercury, John Dagastino, 56, of Waterbury, was taken to Waterbury Hospital to be evaluated for knee pain, while his lone passenger, Linda Bierwirth, 58, of Naugatuck, was not injured, the report states. Baker was the only person in his car.

Emergency responders say that based on reports that Baker was slumped over the wheel, they believe he had some sort of medical condition that led to the accident.

Local and state police were on scene, along with firefighters from both towns and EMTs from Beacon Falls. Naugatuck Fire-Police volunteers shut down the road in both directions for a short period, while Sibby's Automotive in Naugatuck removed the vehicles.
