Naugatuck Valley Community College Library Announces Second Annual Human Library

WATERBURY, CT - The NVCC Human Library is looking for students, faculty, and staff to serve as books on April 28!

At the Human Library, books are people and reading is a conversation. This unique event is an opportunity to share our stories with others one-on-one in our community. During this time of unprecedented widespread loneliness and isolation, the NVCC Human Library brings people together and allows them to learn from each other through sharing unique backgrounds, experiences, and challenges. This creates an exciting opportunity for our community to connect with others individually and, by sharing stories, promote values of tolerance and understanding.

Noting the positive reception of the 2018 Human Library event at the college, NVCC Director of Library Services, Jaime Hammond, commented, “The Human Library Planning Committee did a wonderful job organizing 2018’s wildly successfully event. Faculty, staff, students, and members of the community joined together as both books and readers, and all agreed that it was an eye-opening, inspiring, and unifying experience. I am really looking forward to this next iteration!”

Invited to tell their individual stories, participants are asked to describe why they are interested in being a Book. For example, how would their story help others? What stereotypes are they trying to break down? The challenge is to “Unjudge someone.” Through this event, NVCC will promote acceptance and understanding and invites our community to practice empathy as they hear from their peers who have faced prejudice and stereotypes and overcome hardships.

The NVCC Human Library will be held virtually on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 from 11:00am-2:00pm during the International Center for the Arts (ICA) Festival. Reference/Instruction Librarian, Jenna Stebbins noted. “We are excited to be a part of the ICA Festival this year, as the theme of ‘Reconnection’ through honest and open conversation is one of the primary goals of the event.”
