Bernice was a graduate of Wilby High School in Waterbury; she then attended Post Junior College before enlisting into the United States Navy from 1944-1946 where she proudly served our country during WWII as a Yeoman 2nd class officer. Had her mother not become ill, she might have stayed years longer.

She married her beloved husband, the late Donald E. Sterner on April 17, 1948; the couple made their home in Wolcott, where she remained a resident for 58 years before moving to Ashlar Village in 2012. She was a member of the Mill Plain Union Church in Waterbury since 1976.

Bernice is survived by her beloved children, David C. Sterner of Florida and Stephanie J. Sterner of South Africa; her niece, Diane Caton of Wakefield, MA; as well as extended family members and friends who will all miss her. She was predeceased by her husband on January 10, 2000.

Bernice was a warm, caring person with a sharp mind who didn’t take any nonsense from anyone. If you weren’t careful, you’d have a finger pointed at you with a “Listen, buster!” to go with it! She was independent until weeks before her passing, and more than one person will miss their interesting conversations with her.

In accordance with her wishes, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of The Wallingford Funeral Home.
