Obituary: Dr. Helmuth W. “Dutch” Schultze, 93, of Asheville, NC

His second career was as owner and CEO of The Starbuck Sprague Company in Waterbury, CT for over 30 years.

Dr. Helmuth W. “Dutch” Schultze, of Asheville, NC passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 24, 2021. He was 93. Dutch is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Patricia Hattler Schultze, children Cynthia Schultze Newell and her husband Richard, Jon Schultze and his wife Nancy, Jeffrey Schultze and his wife Lisa, grandchildren Elisabeth Newell, Michael Newell, Rachel Schultze and Michelle Schultze, and his former wife, Dorothy Roth.

Dutch was born in Tarrytown, NY to Walter and Hedwig Kleindienst Schultze. He graduated from Ossining High School in 1945 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Pacific during and after World War II and was awarded the Victory Medal (World War II) and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal. After his service, he graduated from SUNY in Albany with a Bachelor of Science degree, and then earned his Ph.D. degree in Chemistry at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he was a teacher and a member of Sigma Xi Honor Society.

His first career, as an executive in the chemical industry, included positions with Union Carbide Corp., Group VP at Tenneco Chemicals, Inc., President and Chairman of the Board of Michigan Chemical Corporation, and Group VP at Allied Chemical Corp.; he also served as interim President of Ethan Allen and President of Chlorine Institute.

His second career was as owner and CEO of The Starbuck Sprague Company in Waterbury, CT for over 30 years, expanding the business from one to three locations during this time. He also served on the Board of Directors of First Bank in New Haven, CT. In his non-working time, Dutch enjoyed travel (both international and visiting national parks), photography, art, being outdoors, gardening, Sunday crossword puzzles and spending time with family.

Dutch lived in Farmington, CT for 37 years before he and Patti moved to Asheville, NC in 2015.

He will be privately laid to rest in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, NY with his parents and his brother, Lothar Schultze.
