Obituary: Dr. John L. Varanelli, 86, of Waterbury

Dr. John L. Varanelli, 86, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2021.
He was born in Waterbury, on June 21, 1934, the son of Michael and Lucia (Massimo) Varanelli.

He attended Holy Cross College, Georgetown University. He graduated from Maryland University with a DMD degree, in 1964, with his brother, Dr. Pasquale Varanelli, and founded their oral surgery practice.
He was a member of the American and CT State Dental Associations, as well as a Fellow of The American Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He was on the attending staff of both Waterbury and St. Mary's Hospitals.

Dr. Varanelli was a lifelong resident of Waterbury, and after his retirement, he enjoyed splitting his time between Waterbury and his retirement home in Westerly, RI.
He is survived by his lifelong partner, Deborah Carroll, his sister-in-law, Janet Varanelli, his nieces and nephews: Janet Royal, Dr. Franklin (Giselle) Varanelli, Michael (Judy-D) Varanelli, Lucia (Glen) Dunham, Mary Susan (Robert) Voghel, Katherine Robert, Brendan Robert. He is also survived by his in-laws, Richard and Rita Carroll, Diana Carroll, and Doreen Carroll, his cousin, Michael (Loretta) Lombardi, and great-niece, Riley Robert, Alexandra Varanelli, Patrick, Catherine, and Matthew Dunham, Lena and Andrew Vogel.
He is predeceased by his brother, Dr. Pasquale Varanelli.
We wish to Thank Dr. Ralph Tremaglio, of Naugatuck, CT, and Dr. Walter Curtice, of Westerly, RI, for their care of John. We would also like to give Special Thanks to his friend and Guardian Angel, Cathy Oatley.
A Mass of Christian Burial will held at 10:00 AM, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 785 Highland Avenue, Waterbury, on May 5, 2021. Burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery, 2324 E. Main St., Waterbury. Family and friends are asked to meet directly at Church.
