Quinnipiac University Community Installs Rain Garden
The Quinnipiac University community members installed a rain garden to benefit Mill River on April 9 and 10.

HAMDEN, CT – Members of the Quinnipiac University community will install a rain garden on the grounds of the Albert Schweitzer Institute, 275 Mount Carmel Ave., on Friday, April 9 and Saturday, April 10.
A rain garden consists of native shrubs, perennials and flowers planted in a small depression, which is generally formed on a natural slope. It is designed to temporarily hold and soak in stormwater runoff from roofs, driveways, patios or lawns that could pollute waterways.
The project is a collaboration between Quinnipiac’s American Society of Civil Engineers student chapter, the Mill River Watershed Association, the Schweitzer Institute and the, “YOU GOT THIS, KID! Leadership Foundation.”

“We have a team of about 20 students, faculty and staff members that will install the rain garden in conjunction with Quinnipiac’s Big Event,” said Courtney McGinnis, an associate professor of biology and a Foundation board member. “The project will directly benefit the Mill River, which abuts the Schweitzer property.”
The rain garden was designed by students in Prof. Kimberly DiGiovanni’s civil engineering class. The student engineers will lay out the project from 3-5 p.m. on Friday, while the team will construct the rain garden on Saturday from 9 a.m.-noon.

Quinnipiac alumnus Chuck Saia, a senior partner at Deloitte, author and university board member, recently formed the foundation to foster the development of young professionals, meanwhile evoking positive change for people with Lupus and our environment.
Saia recently published, “You Got This Kid! Words of Advice for Young Leaders,” with all proceeds being donated to the Saia Family Fund. The foundation relies on book and merchandise sales and honorable donations to the Saia Family Fund at Quinnipiac University.
“For environmental sustainability, we have opted to do partnerships with community-based organizations, such as the Mill River Watershed Association, so we can join them to have an impact within our communities,” Saia said.
