Something magical happens when you walk through the door at New Insights Boutique in Sandy Hook. The minute you step in, the atmosphere just feels a little lighter, as if a weight has been taken off your shoulders. The owners, Sue Bucur and her daughter Sam welcome you into their little haven of calm, surrounded by crystals, candles, jewelry and all sorts of one-of-a-kind items. Take your time and look around. There’s no need to rush once you’re there.

Just over a year-and-a-half ago, Sue and Sam created the space, which is situated in a lovely pocket of town overlooking the Pootatuck River. They’ve done things differently than most businesses. They actually started off as an online retailer, but then realized that people needed to actually experience the products they offer, so they added their brick-and-mortar location. During this time of Covid, when stress levels are so high, Sue said it was her intention to create the store as a doorway for people to find their own truth.

She’s no stranger to personal trials. In addition to Sam, Sue has another daughter who is intellectually disabled. The challenges they’ve faced along the way led Sue to discover the healing power of alternative modalities, and now she’s inspired to share this with others. “I’ve always had an affinity for crystals,” said Sue. The store is adorned with hundreds of different types and Sue and Sam enjoy sharing their knowledge of how to work with different stones. In addition, they offer an array of holistic sessions at the shop on weekends. “We have an amazing healing team,” said Sue. “These experienced and compassionate healers are brilliant in their fields—everything from Reiki and energy work, to tarot, astrology, numerology and mediumship.” Sessions are offered by appointment and walk-in, and some sessions are available virtually, as well.

Sue and Sam invite people to come stop by the store and chat anytime. They’ve made sure to take all safety precautions, such as having sanitizer and gloves available, and a sneeze guard in the reading room. “Our customers aren’t just happy-go-lucky people looking for a rock,” she said. “This is serious business.” It’s true. Studies are being released that show that people are turning to spirituality and wellness in record numbers during the pandemic. What at one time may have seemed “woo-woo” is now becoming more mainstream. Visitors to New Insights are encouraged to discuss their needs and concerns with Sue or Sam. “I try to assist others in easing their suffering by expanding their perspective,” said Sue. She might suggest things like using lavender oil for more restful sleep or using a rose quartz crystal for a healing meditation. Whatever your needs might be, Sue and Sam will be happy to make some recommendations.

The pair are gearing up for a busy holiday season, and have been stocking the shelves with a vast assortment of gift items. There’s something for everyone on your list—organic bath and body items, candles, tarot and oracle cards, books, clothing and even masks and refreshing mask sprays.
“This really is the most interesting place,” said Sue. “There’s never a dull moment. People feel safe coming here. They come and chat, and then walk out feeling a little lighter.”
