Newtown Cracks Top 5 In Final Girls Soccer Coaches Poll

The Nighthawks bowed to top-seeded Glastonbury in the Class LL quarterfinals.

NEWTOWN, CT — Despite a quarterfinal loss to Glastonbury in the Class LL state tournament, Newtown High School earned the number five position in the final girls soccer coaches poll for Classes LL-L.

The Nighthawks compiled a 12-2-2 regular season record, then won two games in the tournament before bowing to Glastonbury. Class LL champion Ridgefield, LL runner-up Staples, Glastonbury and Class L champion Tolland finished ahead of Newtown in the balloting.

Lewis Mills captured its first Class M title, going into overtime to take down Plainfield 2-1 Sunday, also at West Haven. The Spartans received top nods from six of seven voters in Classes M-S, with Class S champion Old Lyme garnering the other first-place vote to wind up second. Plainfield came in third in the balloting.
