Newtown High Student Wins National Merit Scholarship

Newtown High School student Jake Pare won a corporate-sponsored scholarship from Hubbell Incorporated.

NEWTOWN, CT — Newtown High School student Jake Pare won a corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship. Pare plans to study mechanical engineering.

The scholarship was sponsored by Hubbell Incorporated, which has its corporate headquarters in Shelton. Hubbell manufactures electrical and electronic products for commercial, industrial, utility and telecommunication markets. The company funds scholarships each year for children of its employees.

Students who received corporate sponsored scholarships were finalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition. Corporate sponsors provide scholarships for finalists who are children of employees, residents of communities the company serves or who plans to pursue college majors that the sponsor wishes to encourage.

Most of the awards are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate college student and come with annual stipends between $1,000 and $10,000 per year. Some provide single payments between $2,500 and $10,000 per year.
