Richard Wallace Newman, Sr., 88, Longtime Newtowner, Passed Away Peacefully

NEWTOWN, CT —

Richard Wallace Newman, Sr, 88, a longtime resident of Newtown, passed away peacefully at his home in Stratford on November 17, surrounded by his wife Jane and family, following a long illness.He was born in Stratford on December 4, 1927 to Willard and Harriet Newman. After graduating from Milford High School he enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces from 1946-1949 where he served as a radar operator on the B-17 " Flying Fortress " Bomber while stationed in Panama.

He met his wife Jane Burton while attending Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. They were married in 1951 and resided in Newtown for 43 years before moving to Stratford. In 1990 he retired from the Eaton Corporation in Bethel, formerly the Consolidated Controls Corporation, after a long career in manufacturing management.He was a lifetime member of the Fairfield County Fish and Game Club and was an avid skeet and sporting clays shooter. In addition he loved to fly, was an avid football fan and loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jane; sons Michael and wife Judy of Southlake, TX and Richard Jr and wife Jan of Danbury, CT; granddaughters Gail Newman Beaubien and husband Jim of Ipswich, MA and Leigh Newman Malik and husband Ales of Hanford, CA. His sisters Doris Persson and Ruth Kilpatrick of Milford, CT and brothers William and Arthur Newman of Schenectady, NY and Phoenix,AZ respectively, predeceased him.The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at St Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport and the in home caregivers and Hospice nurses who provided comfort to him in his final weeks. Per his request no funeral or memorial services will be held.
