Weathered Way: Hidden Gem on Obtuse Road
The antique and vintage shop in a rural Newtown barn is debuting a holiday show this weekend.
A barn tucked away in a rural driveway at 3Â Obtuse Road hides one of Newtown's smallest but most colorful shops.
Weathered Way, the creation of Katherine Williams, is a vintage and antique gallery on the barn's second floor. It's been in business for about a year, opening on Saturdays or by special appointment, when patrons can browse its selection of vintage decor, framed prints, oil paintings and other choice items. "We wanted to create a country feel, and I think we've achieved that," Williams says. "With the home decor, we're trying to create a contemporary look, mixing in some old things."
The shop is celebrating Small Business Saturday and the kickoff of the holiday season with an open house showcasing its line of Christmas ornaments, candles and gifts."This show is basically a holiday theme," Williams says. It opens Friday at 10:00 a.m. The shop will stay open for extended hours — every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. until Dec. 21.
You may not have known about Weathered Way unless you passed the sign on the road. A United Kingdom native, Williams sometimes brings back treasures she finds in her home country. Her son Johnny Williams, a local woodworker and artist, holds his workshop in the barn and sells his furniture and cutting boards in the shop.
"I moved into this house about five years ago, and when we moved here it was basically just storage and wasn't renovated," Katherine says. "Johnny and I renovated it together. It just took off from there."

Williams brings her experience in the antique world as a former manager of a 6,000-square-foot antique store in Mamaroneck, NY. She's sold at multiple antique fairs in the area and holds a booth at the Connecticut Antique Center in Stamford.
