Millennium Dance Company (MDC) is a not-for-profit dance school that was started by E. Denise Perry in December of 1994, with three little girls in the basement of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. It is dedicated to the preservation and authentic representation of dance in culture with a base of spirituality while utilizing dance as a vehicle for social change. Millennium Dance Company helps to foster high self-esteem, self-awareness, and positive thinking in our students by assisting them in developing skills in the virtue of discipline, strength, and commitment.
Millennium Dance Company offers a plethora of classes such as Ballet, Graham-Based Modern, Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Contemporary, African, and Latin. The classes are available to students ranging in age from two to adult. Every June, all the students have the opportunity to share on stage with family and friends, what Millennium Dance Company provides on a yearly basis; the many teaching styles of the various dance classes offered. Etiquette classes have been offered and it commenced with a Cotillion. Millennium also created a Father/Daughter Initiative program that commenced with a Father Daughter Dance. The Father Daughter Dance received media coverage from The New York Daily News, New York 1, and a segment on World News Tonight with Diane Sawyer. Partnerships are very important to Millennium Dance Company. Though, we are currently partnered with the New York City Department of Education and the 46 Precinct; our past partnerships include The Bronx Crimes Victims Unit and The Girl Scouts
of America as well.
E. Denise Perry has been immersed in the world of dance for over 30 years. As a child, Ms. Perry began taking dance classes at Mabel Heart Dance School, where she took Ballet and Modern. Years later, she obtained a scholarship to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center as well as The Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance. Driving herself to excel, Ms. Perry received her Bachelor's Degree in Dance from American University and her Master's Degree in dance from New York University. Throughout her years as a student, Ms. Perry was personally taught and trained by 3 legends; Martha Graham, Katherine Dunham, and Alvin Ailey. This led her to become the first African American woman to be certified in the Graham Technique. Denise Perry was not just a great student but she became a great instructor as well. Over the years, she was an instructor at Dance Space, Mind Builders, Steps on Broadway, Queens College and a professor at Howard University.
