Legendary CT Sportscaster Leaves Station After 30 Years

"For decades now, I've reported on Free Agents in Sports.. the time is right to become one myself..."

Rich Coppola, the longtime Sports Director at Fox61, recently left the station after 30 years, he announced on his Facebook page on Tuesday.

"For decades now, I've reported on Free Agents in Sports... the time is right to become one myself," Coppola wrote. "It's been a fantastic run at FOX61, and while I leave behind great memories and will miss my colleagues, I am excited about new ventures and challenges ahead."

Coppola, who was elected into the state Coaches Hall of Fame in 2016, had been with Fox61 since it went on the air in 1989, and was celebrated earlier this year for the 30-year milestone.

"I appreciate all the support I’ve received from FOX61/CW20 management over the years and will always be grateful to them," Coppola said on Facebook. "I also appreciate the support of all the Connecticut athletes, coaches and fans who have made my time covering sports these past 30 years at FOX61 such a rewarding experience. Thank You!"

An East Haven native, Coppola held positions at ESPN, KC 101 and at an NBC affiliate in Springfield, MA before landing at Fox61.

He has also won Connecticut Sportscaster of the Year nine times, in addition to receiving a host of other accolades.
