Norwalk's East Avenue Still Closed After Truck Crash, Down Wires

Utility wires on East Avenue were knocked down by a truck crash on Thursday, which led to the temporary closure of the road.

NORWALK, CT — A portion of East Avenue in Norwalk remained closed Friday morning as repairs continued following Thursday's truck crash that knocked down utility wires and caused a power outage to the area, according to Norwalk police.

As of 6:57 p.m. on Thursday, power had been restored, according to Eversource. When authorities will reopen the road was not disclosed.

On Thursday, Norwalk fire officials released the following statement about the crash and emergency response:

The Norwalk Fire Department responded to an accident involving a small box truck into a telephone pole on East Avenue, just north of Route, at 3:35pm, Thursday afternoon. The box truck which had 2 occupants split a pole in half and the tension caused the adjacent pole to also split. While diverting traffic and clearing the hazard area, a transformer blew and wires were smoking.

East Avenue was closed between Cannon Street and Route 1 and the residents on the pole side of the street were advised to stay in their homes.

The occupants of the truck appeared uninjured and Eversource crews arrived on scene within a few minutes to assess the situation.

Norwalk Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

Original story: As of 4:13 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2, a power outage was affecting just over 1,000 Eversource customers in Norwalk after utility wires on East Avenue were knocked down, according to Norwalk police.

East Avenue temporarily was closed between Westport Avenue and Sawmill Road as Eversource crews worked on the problem. When the road was going to reopen was not disclosed.
