Snow Emergency Declared In Norwalk: Mayor

Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling declared a snow emergency from Dec. 16 until further notice.

NORWALK, CT — Due to the expected winter storm Wednesday into Thursday, Dec. 16 and 17, Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling declared a snow emergency that went into effect at noon on Wednesday, and remain in effect until further notice.

City buildings and offices closed at 1 p.m. Wednesday, and hours of operation for those buildings will be determined on Thursday. A delayed opening or closure is possible on Thursday.

Norwalk Public Schools will switch to all remote learning until Jan. 4, but schools will be closed on Thursday due to the storm, according to district officials.

"Due to the unpredictability of a storm this intense, Norwalk Public Schools will close for instruction tomorrow, Thursday, December 17," district officials wrote on Facebook. "The snow day will be made up by adding an extra day to the calendar at the end of the year. Remote learning is expected to return on Friday, December 18."

Garbage and recycling collection in Norwalk will be canceled on Thursday, and that routes will be collected Friday, Dec. 18. Friday routes will be collected Saturday, Dec. 19.

Additionally, Rilling announced the following:

  • The Norwalk Transfer Station and Yard Waste Site will be closed on Thursday, December 17. Normal hours will resume on Friday, December 18.
  • COVID-19 testing operations at Veteran’s Park will be closed on Thursday, December 17. Normal testing hours will resume on Friday, December 18. The latest testing news can be found at norwalkct.org/testing.
  • All meal distribution sites in Norwalk will be closed tomorrow, Thursday, December 17. Sites will reopen Friday, December 18.
  • The Yankee Doodle and Maritime Garages will be open for free parking. All other parking facilities need to be cleared out between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. to allow for snow removal services to ensure that business customers can park.
  • The Community Room at the Norwalk Police Department is open for residents to warm up or charge devices. COVID-19 protocols are in place, and face coverings are required.
