Dems Mum on First Selectman Candidate

Town committee says a candidate is in place, but won't say who it is.

What we do know is that the Oxford Democrats have a candidate whom they will put up for first selectman in the November election. What we don't know, at this point, is who that person is.

Ann Krane, chairwoman of the Democratic Town Committee, tells Patch that the committee has a candidate whom it is excited about. But she said that person's name will not be revealed to the public until the Democrats caucus on July 23 to officially choose a slate of candidates.

"We have a very good candidate," she said. "We are very pleased with how things are going; we are filling up our slate and working very hard on it."

She did say, however, who the first selectman candidate is not. She told Patch that rumors about former Economic Development Director Herman Schuler running for first selectman on the Democratic ticket are not true. And she said the committee has not sought out former first selectman candidate Joe Calabrese to run again for the town's top political spot.

"We've approached Mr. Calabrese about being on one of the boards, and he has not given us an answer yet," she said on Sunday.

She said Selectman Dave McKane will once again run in the selectman spot.

Republican First Selectman George Temple plans to run again with Selectman Jeff Haney as his running mate; they were first elected in 2011.

Nobody else has announced an intention to run for first selectman.
