Police are reminding residents to lock their vehicles due to a recent "drastic uptick" in vehicle burglaries in Oxford and surrounding towns
OXFORD, CT — In the wake of a recent “drastic uptick” in vehicle break-ins and stolen cars throughout the state, police are reminding Oxford residents to lock their vehicles and keep valuables out of plain sight.
Police also said there was a recent incident in Oxford where a woman’s purse was stolen from the passenger seat while she was pumping gas.
“These incidents in the surrounding towns seem to target females,” officials wrote in a post on the State Police - Oxford Resident Trooper's Office Facebook page. “Unfortunately, most newer cars have their doors automatically unlock when you turn off the car and open the driver side door. These incidents happen quickly so please be vigilant when your pumping gas, putting groceries in your vehicle, etc.

“Also, the towns surrounding Oxford have been hit hard by thieves cutting off catalytic converters from vehicles. A majority of these thefts have been from industrial / commercial zones. We are monitoring the situations and have been conducting extra patrols in our industrial zones.
“While we have stepped up patrols and utilizing other methods to try and catch / discourage these individuals, we do rely on our strongest asset…. the citizens of Oxford. Please report any suspicious activity to the Oxford Resident Troopers Office 203-888-4353.”
