Haynes Announces Plan for a Supermarket to Anchor 'Oxford Towne Center'

The market would be the centerpiece of a larger development that is pending in the land use boards.

Oxford officials announced Tuesday that Haynes Development is finalizing negotiations with a major grocer anchor and hopes to begin construction in the summer of 2014.

Haynes has a proposal pending before the Planning & Zoning Commission to begin excavation work on something called Oxford Towne Center, which will be located in the Haynes Quarry at 278 Oxford Road, Route 67.

"While in the preliminary permitting stage, securing the anchor tenant is our primary focus," said Kathryn Ekstrom, spokesperson for Haynes Development. "Great thought and care is going into the design plan; the center will provide the conveniences and services that today's consumers are looking for and future residents will come to experience."

Haynes, which is headquartered in Seymour, acquired the site more than 10 years ago for its development potential, Ekstrom said in a news release.
First Selectman George Temple told Oxford Patch Tuesday that he's excited about the possibility of a commercial development in the quarry area because it could "actually be the center of town that Oxford doesn't have."

“This has been a priority in Oxford for many years and will be a welcome addition to our tax base and provide employment opportunities for our townspeople," he said in a news release. “It will be a welcome change that we do not have to go out of town to do our grocery shopping."
