Oxford 'Champions' Honored By Town For Their Successes

The league coaches and players were the recipients of the Paul Bender Sportsmanship Award given for "Best Sportsmanship."

OXFORD, CT — Two Northern Connecticut Pop Warner Teams from Oxford were presented with Certificates of Accomplishment from First Selectman George Temple and Selectman Scott Flaherty at the February 6th Board of Selectmen meeting.

First Selectman George Temple said, “These kids are recognized for being the Champions that they are. They have learned the valuable lesson that hard work and teamwork produces outstanding achievement”.

Oxford’s U12 Football Team had a very successful season. They won the Northern Connecticut Pop Warner Championship against The Plainville Colts. The final score was 38-19. Head Coach Aaron Sill said, “I could not have asked to coach a better group of young men. Every boy on this team did what was asked of their coaches and executed it to perfection! They all worked very hard and their efforts paid off with a NCTPW championship and a CTPW state runners-up.

The leagues coaches and players were the recipients of the Paul Bender Sportsmanship Award given for “Best Sportsmanship”. This award was given through the officials. “These boys are a true indicator of what you can achieve with hard work, dedication, teamwork and perseverance. As a program, not only are we teaching these kids the fundamentals of football but also the importance of good academics, good sportsmanship and commitment”, said Coach Mike Pryde.

The Football Team was not the only winner in Oxford this season. The Jr. Varsity Cheer Team, earned a spot in the Pop Warner National Cheer Competition at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida. The team took home a 3rd place National trophy on December 3, 2018. Head Coach Maika Mucciacciaro said,” the girls learned many difficult skills this year and progressed very well. They were dedicated and worked hard at every practice. I am very proud of them this season. It has been an honor to coach in this league for the past six years”. The Jr. Varsity Team also placed 2nd in the State and Local Competitions and 3rd at the Regional Competition held in Lowell, Ma.
