Oxford Man Run Over By Own Car, Suffers Serious Injuries: Police

The accident occurred at a local liquor store's parking lot, State Police say.

OXFORD, CT — A 73-year-old Oxford man suffered serious injuries Wednesday after he was run over by his own car while in the parking lot of Oxford Liquor Shoppe at 19 Oxford Road, according to State Police said.

The accident was reported around 3 p.m. Stephen Kovzel Jr., 73, of Ancient Highway, was parked in the liquor store's parking lot and a car driven by Mark Reilly, 62, of Beacon Falls was also parked in the lot, State Police said.

Kovzel's vehicle was not in park and rolled back into Reilly's car and as Kovzel was getting out of his car, Reilly's vehicle continued to roll backward, State Police said.

"(Kovzel) had been caught by the door and was run over by his own vehicle prior to coming to a rest in the Northbound lane of Oxford Road, against the steel guard rail," State Police say.

Kovzel was taken to a local hospital after suffering serious arm and leg injuries. State Police said Kovzel caused the accident by unsafe backing. Reilly was cited for evading responsibility and various motor vehicle infractions.

The accident remains under investigation.
