Oxford Teacher Who Assigned Slavery Homework Won’t Be Back

The teacher, whose controversial slavery assignment sparked outrage in the community, won't be back next year, according to a report.

OXFORD, CT — The Great Oak Middle School teacher whose controversial slavery assignment sparked outrage in the community won’t be back next year, according to the News-Times.

Superintendent of Schools Jason McKinnon told the News-Times that the first-year teacher was eliminated due to budget cuts from enrollment decline and it had nothing to do with the controversial assignment.

In the assignment, which was culled from the National Geographic website, the students were required to imagine themselves as slaves living on a pre-Civil War southern plantation and finding ways to escape to freedom, according to the News-Times.
