Small Oxford Girls Swim Team Has Huge Victory

The girls team has few members but a lot of heart.

With only 11 swimmers and one diver, the Oxford girls swim team defeated Stratford at home this week 92-82 to secure its first victory of the season.

"It is a great achievement to have a victory with such a small team," Head Coach Karen Bertapelle said. "Every member of the team had to give 110 percent today to make this happen."

Oxford placed first in eight out of the 12 events, including in the top three in the 500 freestyle. (1. Megan Vitka, 2. Emily Waehler, 3. Adriana Veltri)
Other first place finishes included:

200 Free: Emily Waehler 2:18.51; 200 IM: Kerstin Eckner 2:36.68; Diving: Laura Wood 152.30; 100 Fly: Veronika Jelenik 1:139.45; 100 Back: Kerstin Eckner 1:10.82; 100 Breast: Ellie Gamauf 1:23.84.

The score was tied at 80 going into the final event, the 400 Free Relay.

Oxford's 'A' 400 Free Relay with: Veronika Jelenik, Emily Waehler, Megan Vitka and team captain Kerstin Eckner took first place with a time of 4:16.64; and the 'B' 400 Free Relay with: Adriana Veltri, Allie Divincenzo, Haley Guliuzza, and Cassie Veltri took a crucial second place, with a time of 5:12.18, to seal the victory.

"It's a great win for us." Bertapelle said. "I'm very proud of our girls."
