OXFORD, CT — In-person classes at Oxford High School were canceled Friday after a student tested positive for the coronavirus.

Officials were notified Thursday afternoon that the student had tested positive for COVID-19, according to Superintendent of Schools Jason McKinnon. Afternoon activities at the high school were canceled.

In a letter to families and staff, McKinnon said Oxford High School would be closed for in-person classes on Friday and students would participate in remote learning. All before and after school activities were also canceled on Friday.

Officials began contact tracing on Thursday and anyone considered a primary contact will be notified directly by the school’s nurse or the Pomperaug Health District. Primary contacts are required to remain home and quarantine for 14 days, according to McKinnon.

“Our contact tracing efforts will continue into tomorrow,” McKinnon said in the letter. “Once we learn the full extent of the exposure, we will develop a plan for the high school for next week and provide details to staff and families. At this time, we are not aware of any exposures to other students and schools. Therefore, students in grades K-8 will continue in-person instruction.”
