For All Ages Hosts Buddies & Bobbers Learn-to-Fish Fishing Derby

Adults age 50+ are invited to volunteer to teach a youth to fish - no fishing license required.

For All Ages, the nonprofit organization that connects the generations to end loneliness and reduce ageism, will host its inaugural Buddies & Bobbers Learn-to-Fish Fishing Derby on May 22 in collaboration with and on-site at Winding Trails in Farmington.

This innovative free event, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., will pair experienced angler volunteers age 50+ with children ages 6-12, accompanied by a parent or guardian. Space is limited for this morning of nature-based fun, conservation education, intergenerational connection and competition, and pre-registration is required at forallages.org/fishing-derby. Fishing licenses are not required, and gear will be provided for youth if needed.

“We are excited to be hosting an outdoor, in-person event,” says For All Ages founder and CEO Deb Bibbins. “We’re capping attendance to ensure social distancing protocols can be maintained,” she explains, “and we are looking forward to creating a safe environment in which adults can teach fundamental fishing skills to a new generation.” Teams of young and experienced anglers will be treated to a free continental breakfast and lunch and will have the chance to win fun prizes.

Intergenerational connection has the power to change lives and communities, and For All Ages is committed to creating programs that give older adults the opportunity to share their wisdom and experience. Events like Buddies & Bobbers also improve young people’s social skills, self-esteem and perceptions of older adults. At the heart of the organization’s mission is ending loneliness: a pervasive issue for individuals in both groups, which has only intensified as a result of the pandemic.

“We are proud to be providing a wholesome, safe, outdoor event that fosters social engagement,” says For All Ages co-founder and COO Gary Sekorski. Loneliness, he explains, is like hunger: “It’s simply a sign that someone is craving a basic need.” As kids and their mentors bait hooks and cast lines, they’ll also reel in a sense of connection and belonging that can go a long way toward reversing loneliness’s negative effects on mental and physical health.
