Connecticut Weather: Potential Major Snowstorm In The Forecast

We already know about the freezing temps, but a potential significant snowstorm is very possible early in 2018. Here's the latest details.

When 2017 departs and 2018 arrives at midnight it's going to feel anywhere from 5 to 20 degrees below zero in Connecticut once you factor in the wind chill. Good times right? The actual temperature around midnight will be anywhere from zero in northern Connecticut to a balmy 5 degrees on the shoreline.

And here's more "good news" for you. There is the potential for a significant snowstorm for the state beginning late Wednesday throughout Thursday. Once the snow ends, if it snows of course, then we're headed back into the freezer with temps around 10 degrees next weekend. Happy New Year!

As for New Year's Eve, a Hazardous Weather Outlook and Wind Chill Advisory have been issued for Connecticut. In inland sections of Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, and New London counties the wind chill will make it feel 10 to 20 below zero late tonight, early Monday.

For areas along the immediate shoreline, it will feel anywhere between 5 to 15 degrees below zero. In Hartford and Tolland counties, the wind chill factor will make it feel like 5 to 20 degrees below zero.

And as for Thursday's possible snowstorm, NBC Connecticut Meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan said Sunday, "Don't write off the Thursday storm! Plenty of spread in possible solutions with a big offshore storm. This graph shows the spread with our GFS ensembles - the spread is huge! Bottom line is we don't know yet but a significant snow event is certainly possible."

He also added on social media, "Tough forecast for Thursday. Big southern stream disturbance and big northern stream trough. Seems unlikely they phase in time for a blockbuster storm here but digging trough and some moisture should allow snow to extend unusually far west of storm."

WTNH News 8 Meteorologist said, "If this cold isn't enough for you, there is a storm that needs to be watched closely for Thursday. I'm confident there will be a storm offshore but we'll have to see how significant the snow/wind impact will be here locally depending on its track."

The National Weather Service is offering these initial thoughts on the Wednesday night/Thursday potential snow.

"Accumulating snow is possible as low pressure tracks off the New England coast. While it is far too early to determine snowfall amounts, winter weather headlines may eventually be required."
