Simsbury is extremely lucky to have the Historical Society offer programs such that they did recently for Simsbury Heritage Day.
As we approach Veteran’s Day this was especially meaningful. The Second Continental Light Dragoons conducted a Libation Service at the Center Cemetery. When the commander called all those who have taken the "oath to serve”, three members of our local VFW and a resident joined in. They each took a sip of the “special wine” then the wine was poured on the ground in front of the stone with the names of the men from Simsbury who gave their lives during theRevolutionary War.
This special service was conducted in honor of those who have died serving the country. This ritual is steeped in history just as Simsbury is. For those of you who do not know about the Libation Service with the Second Continental Light Dragoons it is a service that was started back around 1780 by George Washington. The wine that was used was made from the same grape vines and recipe that was used in 1780.
Thank you Simsbury Historical Society for giving us all the opportunity to know about the history of our Town and our Country.
