Bunnell Boys Fall Short To New Fairfield in Track and Field

Puzzo Valiant In Losing Effort

On Thursday May 13th, on a sun drenched afternoon at Bunnell High School’s Robert Mastroni Field, the Bulldogs met up with the New Fairfield Rebels in exciting South West Conference track and field action.

Weather-wise it was a top ten spring day for any sports venue. Temperatures hovered around the 70 degree mark with a light and variable breeze.

Up first on the track, the 4X800 Relay race. New Fairfield’s entry of Devin Krauss, Ralph Lagerman, Carrington Flynn, and Patrick Gibbons outlasted the Bunnell team of Armand Fabrizi, Vincenzo Fabrizi, Dominck Puzzo, and Mario Oliva with a time of 9:09. Bunnell’s time was 9:19.

In the 4X100 Relay race, the Bunnell team of Guido Llanos, Matt Stewart, Mikail Francis, and Jonathan Gulish ran unopposed in a time of 47.2.

In the 110 Hurdles, New Fairfield’s Dominick Kentish was first with a time of 19.9 seconds. In second place, New Fairfield’s Derrick Tavares in a time of 21.0 seconds. In third place, Bunnell’s Huy Huong with a time of 22.2 seconds.

Over in the Javelin event, New Fairfield’s Daniel Handlmaier was first with a mark of 139’-9”. Second was Bunnell’s Jakub Olechno with a mark of 122’-0”. In third place, New Fairfield’s Sam Raiano with a mark of 100’-3”.

On the track in the 100 Meter dash, New Fairfield’s Kentish was first at 11.5 seconds. In second, Bunnell’s Stewart at 11.6 seconds. In third place, Bunnell’s Francis at 12.3 seconds.

Staying on the track with the most exciting finish of the day was the 1600 Meter race. Bunnell’s Puzzo and New Fairfield’s Jack Sedito. The two talked prior to the race and shared similar best times of 5:23 earlier in the season. Little did they know that today they would go down to the wire with new best times in an exhausting last seventy-five meters that saw Puzzo come all the way back from a Sedito lead.

Sedito had opened up a sizable lead in lap three. Puzzo started making gains as the race went into the final lap. As the two went around turn three, of lap four, Puzzo caught up to Sedito with one-hundred meters to go. It was an all out foot race to the finish line. At the finish line Sedito was able to lunge just ahead of Puzzo to finish first in a time of 5:19.05. Puzzo finished second at 5:19.28. In third place, Bunnell’s V. Fabrizi at 5:24.

In the Long Jump event, Bunnell’s Stewart had his personal best jump finishing first with a mark at 20’-1”. In second place, New Fairfield’s Kentish at 18’-9”. In third place, Bunnell’s Raeshawn Hasty-Pettway with a mark of 14’-10.5”.

The 400 Meter race saw Bunnell’s Gulish in the top spot at 52.6 seconds. In second place, New Fairfield’s Lagerman with a time of 53.00 seconds. In third place, Bunnell’s Llanos at 59.7 seconds.

It was all New Fairfield in the Shot Put with Raiano measuring up a throw of 35’-9”. In second place, 32’-’6”. In third place, Wes Orlowski with a mark of 29’-2”.

In the Discus event, New Fairfield’s Raiano was first with a throw of 89’-6”. In second place, Bunnell’s Olechno with a mark of 74’-5”. In third place, New Fairfield’s Handlmaier with a mark of 74’-3”.

In the 300 Hurdles race, New Fairfield’s Tavares was first at 50.1 seconds. In second place, New Fairfield’s Nathanial Vujs at 52.1 seconds. In third place, Bunnell’s Huy Huong with a time of 55.1 seconds.

Results of the Triple Jump event were now final with Bunnell’s Bolelembe Iboke first with a mark of 30’-8”. In second place, New Fairfield’s Tavares with a jump of 28’-9”. In third place, New Fairfield’s Jeffery Bollacke with a mark of 27’-11”.

In the 800 Meter race, New Fairfield took their second sweep of the afternoon as Krauss was first in a dog fight race with teammate Gibbons with a time of 2:18.20. Gibbons second at 2:18.79. In third place, Aleksei Gentry with a time of 2:32.

Bunnell would have a sweep of their own in the 200 Meter race and get as close to the New Fairfield lead that it had to this point in the meet.

In first place, Stewart with a time of 23.3 seconds. In second place, Francis at 25.2 seconds. In third place, Iboki with a time of 26.1 seconds.

In the High Jump event, New Fairfield’s James Rea was first at 5’-6”. In second place, New Fairfield’s Kentish at 5’-4”. In third place, Bunnell’s Olechno with a mark of 5’-2”.

In the 3200 Meter race, New Fairfield’s Gibbons ran off to a commanding lead and a 10:26 first place finish. In second place, Bunnell’s M. Oliva in at 10:49. In third place, enjoying his best day this season, Bunnell’s Puzzo with a 12:24 finish. Puzzo’s finish was close to two minutes off his season best prior to this race.

In the Pole Vault event, Bunnell’s Puzzo finished in first place with a height of 8’-6”. In second place, New Fairfield’s Sedito with a height of 8’-0”. In third place, by pole vault rules, New Fairfield’s John Rigoglioso with a height of 8’-0”.

The final event of the afternoon saw New Fairfield’s 4X400 Relay team of Sedito, Vujs, Krauss, and Lagerman win with a finish of 3:50.

Bunnell’s 4X400 Relay team of Francis, Llanos, Hasty-Pettway, and Iboki finished in a time of 3:58.

Final score New Fairfield 88 - Bunnell 62.

Bunnell’s record goes to 3 wins and 5 losses.
