Woman, 76, Safely Evacuates Apartment Fire In Stratford

Crews responded to the fire on Tuesday morning.

STRATFORD, CT — A 76-year-old woman safely evacuated her apartment after a kitchen fire Tuesday morning in Stratford, according to officials.

Crews responded to44 Leeward Drive around 11 a.m. on the report of a structure fire, according to Assistant Fire Chief/Fire Marshal Robert Daniel.

“Under the command of Assistant Chief Brennan, Engines 1, 2, 3, Tac5 and Truck 1 responded with a total of 18 firefighters and one safety officer,” Daniel wrote in a news release. “On arrival, smoke was visible coming from a first-floor kitchen window of the 500-square foot apartment. The fire was contained to the kitchen and was under control in 10 minutes.”

The woman has been displaced from the Stratford Housing Authority apartment due to smoke damage, according to Daniel.

Daniel said the cause of the fire was determined to be “accidental due to cooking.”
