More Than 1,000 Lose Power In Stratford Amid Icy Weather

UPDATE: As of about 9 p.m., the number of United Illuminating Co. customers without power in Stratford had dropped from 1,050 to about 375, according to the company outage map.

"The Lordship section of town is currently experiencing an outage of power due to a downed tree," Mayor Laura Hoydick said in a Twitter post. "United Illuminating is reporting a projected repair by 1:00 a.m."


STRATFORD, CT — More than 1,000 United Illuminating Co. customers lost power Tuesday in Stratford after a day of ice and rain, according to the company's outage map.

The outage, which was affecting 1,050 customers about 7 p.m., began about 6:40 p.m. and was expected to be resolved by 8:15 p.m., the map said.

The incident followed a day of freezing rain that saw schools close in town. The area is under a Hazardous Weather Outlook, as well as a Winter Weather Advisory, which is expected to expire at 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Additionally, a Special Weather Statement from the service issued about 6:40 p.m. warned of conditions that could cause black ice to develop.
