STRATFORD, CT — As the Fourth of July approaches, Stratford officials are reminding residents that many types of fireworks are illegal to possess and use in Connecticut.

Only sparklers and fountains, which are neither explosive nor aerial, are legal in the state, according to a joint news release from the police and fire departments. Sparklers and fountains can be legally purchased and used by people age 16 or older.

Illegal fireworks include novelty items such as party poppers, snakes, smoke devices and anything that emits a flame. In addition to being illegal, exploding devices are dangerous and can result in property damage, injury or even death.
