The A1C test, also known as the hemoglobin A1C or HbA1c test, is a simple blood test that measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 3 months. It is one of the tests used to diagnose prediabetes and diabetes. A1C tests are available at the Trumbull Health Department, by appointment. The test is administered by the Trumbull Public Health Nurse. The cost of the test is $10.00. Results are available within 10 minutes. Blood pressure screening, and height and weight measurements are included. To schedule an appointment, call the Public Health Nurse at 203-452-1030.

Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects how your body turns food into energy. There are three types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 122 million Americans are living with diabetes or prediabetes. Symptoms of diabetes include:

  • Frequent urination, often at night
  • Increased thirsty
  • Extreme hunger
  • Weight loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Numb or tingling hands or feet
  • Tired
  • Dry skin
  • Sores that heal slowly

Residents should consider getting a baseline A1C test if you are an adult 45 years of age or older, or if you are under 45 years of age and are overweight, and if you have one or more risk factors for prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Risk factors include family history, age, race or ethnicity, inactivity, weight, and high blood pressure.
