TRUMBULL, CT — Fairfield County cheered on the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team in the World Cup final game Sunday, but especially the goalie, Alyssa Naeher.
Naeher was born in Bridgeport, raised in Stratford and played soccer at Christian Heritage School in Trumbull, NBC CT reports. About 35 of Naeher's family members gathered in Cheshire to watch the final game, according to NBC CT, while the gym at her old school was filled with people celebrating Naeher as Team USA defeated the Netherlands 2-0, News 12 Connecticut reports.
A parade for the team is planned for Wednesday in New York City, where players will also be presented with the keys to the city, according to a city news release. Sunday marked the team's fourth World Cup victory, breaking a record they set in 2015. The United States is the only country to reach the semifinals of all eight FIFA Women's World Cups that have been held since the inaugural tournament in 1991.
