Report: Unlicensed Lawyer Bilked Trumbull Woman Out of Settlement

Westport man withheld money after settling a case while practicing law without a license.

Trumbull police have charged a Westport man with illegally practicing law and larceny after he allegedly represented a Trumbull woman despite not being a licensed attorney in Connecticut.

Stephen Krawitz, who is licensed to practice in New York, settled the case in the elderly Trumbull woman’s favor, winning her $100,000 in damages related to a car accident, according to the CT Post.

When the woman did not receive her money, she pestered Krawitz, who began to pay it out to her in small installments. She eventually collected over $68,000, however Krawitz kept some $33,000, which he called his fee, the Post reports.

Krawitz is set to be arraigned in Bridgeport Superior Court on Aug. 22 on charges of larceny in the first degree (felony) and illegal practice of law (misdemeanor).
