Trumbull Cop Injured In Crash With Vehicle Burglary Suspects

TRUMBULL, CT — A Trumbull police officer suffered minor injuries early Monday when the officer's police cruiser was struck by an SUV with vehicle burglary suspects inside, according to authorities.

The officer did not require medical treatment following the 3 a.m. incident, which occurred near the intersection of Devellis Drive and Park Lane in Trumbull.

Officers were sent to the area after a resident said they had seen "an individual checking thedoors of vehicles that were parked in their driveway."

Police saw a suspect running away and hopping into a waiting mid-sized. The vehicle then slammed into the police cruiser and sped off, according to authorities. The vehicle and the suspects remain at-large.

Moments later, officers found Waterbury resident Christian Vargas, 18, walking in a nearby driveway and placed him under arrest.

"Officers located two (2) pairs of sunglasses in [Vargas'] possession, which were identified as being stolen from nearby vehicles," Trumbull police said. "Officers observed the video surveillance footage of the individual that was initially observed, but learned that individual was not Vargas, but was one of the suspects that had fled the area. No other victims have come forward, so police are still trying to determine whether property was stolen from other vehicles that were targeted in this neighborhood."

Vargas was charged with third-degree burglary and sixth-degree larceny. He was held in lieu of bail of $1,000, and he is scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on June 21.
