Trumbull Couple Opens Italian Eatery In Fairfield
Since opening their restaurant, Sonia Lopez and Marvin Rivera have donated food to vaccine clinic volunteers, police and firefighters.

FAIRFIELD, CT — A Trumbull couple who recently opened a restaurant in Fairfield are working to not only feed the community, but to give back to it as well.
Sonia’s Gourmet Kitchen opened in mid-March, and has donated meals to several groups of first responders.
“It’s a good way to give back,” said Sonia Lopez, who owns the Italian eatery with her husband, Marvin Rivera.

The restaurant has given food to volunteers at a town vaccine clinic, as well as to the police department and the fire marshal’s office.
“It is wonderful to hear that a new business is eager to help our community,” First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick said in a recent email to residents, which included an acknowledgment of the restaurant’s donation.

Sonia’s Gourmet Kitchen is located at 881 Post Road, in the former home of Mamma Mina’s, which closed in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The new restaurant is a family affair for Lopez and Rivera. Their daughter and son work at the business, as does Lopez’s mother. Lopez’s cousin operates 55 Wine Bar in Fairfield.
“We are a family of entrepreneurs,” Lopez said.
Prior to opening Sonia’s Gourmet Kitchen, Lopez and Rivera leased Rowayton Pizza in Norwalk for several years. Lopez chose to locate her new business in Fairfield because of its reputation in the restaurant industry.
“Everybody says that Fairfield is a great town for restaurants,” she said.
Sonia’s Gourmet Kitchen specializes in homemade pastas and Roman-style pizza, with specialty pies ranging from the Jasmine, a classic pizza with plum tomato purée, baby artichokes, fresh mozzarella and basil, to more unusual options like the Buffalo chicken pizza or a variety of dessert pizzas. The eatery also offers gluten-free pasta and pies, plus a wide selection of wines.
“We love Italy, Italian culture,” Lopez said.
The interior of the restaurant was recently renovated to provide a cozy, kid-friendly dining experience. The menu is also available for pickup and delivery, and the business offers catering as well.
