Trumbull Politico on Why He Switched Parties
Bevilacqua called the Democratic Party a "big dead end."

Louis A Bevilacqua, political strategist and public administrator, issued the following reaction to his abandoning the Democratic Party for the Republican:
“First I should say this is not an emotional decision, as it is not a surprise that the Democratic Party is increasingly becoming the ‘humpback’ party, lacking any authenticity or accessibility for common democrats, manufacturing a common weakness regardless of class or race or sex and is becoming a stage-managed facade controlled entirely by corporate interests inimical to the people. The Party of Jefferson, originally intended with a limited government platform to advance both responsible free choice and the peoples sovereignty has been in decline since George McGovern. Its lack of focus is not entirely its own doing as two of its bright star candidates were assassinated by extremist fanatics in the 1960s.”
“Our politics faces a crisis and it is a desecration of the memory of its founders for the Democratic Party to claim it is for the people when rich donors without principles simply hedge their bets by purchasing access and loyalty. We all know how fluid the loyalty is for this nation’s elite one percent, well, the Democrats should expect no less from the people. National policy reflects this trend and the international global marketplace has made the unthinkable a reality, job one is to preserve both the state and the notion of Government of the people in the future.”
“I, like most Americans, have searched for a stable political vehicle for my beliefs. American politics is not all rhetoric and must never be if it is to remain a Democracy of strong individuals. It certainly cannot be with an irrelevant third party, as the people need both idealism and powerful leaders connected to this moment; the only alternative is the party which claims to salvage representative democracy. Since the Democrats have drunk the hemlock, if the Republican Party doesn’t step up and fill the void, the nation most certainly will die and all the make-up and pomp of inauthentic conventions will not do a thing to bring it back to life.”
“Locally, I strongly believe that Dan Malloy’s administration has been an complete failure and conversations with constituents of mine have informed me of the peoples disappointment with his brand of ‘gameshow host’ Democratic politics. The Union members thrilled with $10.10 an hour are now fighting for their jobs. He is nearly certain to lose, the lack of authentic democracy has resulted in a unanimous re-nomination of the Governor without any dissent, and the entire party will shoulder the defeat, whilst he plans his next career move. The increasing ideological, partisan shifting nature of politics has strengthened the mediocre candidate and has resulted in an alienation of the public from civic involvement.”
Asked whom he felt would be the GOP nominee in 2016 for President, Bevilacqua declined to answer specifically and merely said:
“It is still very early, but I hope there will be a competitive process where the Republican voter selects the next president, not just the elite populars”
“If I am a Republican, it is as an optimist who believes in this country and what our people stand for. The good news is I get to vote on August 12th, contrary to tradition, this year the democrats are silent and we know what they say about democrats as silent as the tomb... you wouldn’t get a dollar for [the party] at the pawn shop”
Bevilacqua’s family has always been registered Democrats, but never blindly supported any candidate that was opposed to the peoples true interest. As press secretary for the Bridgeport City Council he advocated for a return to good, competent government. He was a Democratic delegate to state conventions in previous years and was a founding member of the Connecticut Young Democrats serving as the National Committeeman and Vice Chairman of the YDA International Committee. He has worked on two US Senate Campaigns (always endorsed Democrats) as well as for numerous Democratic Nominees, including Congress and local office. He was vice chairman of his town’s Democratic Committee from 1997-1998.
Bevilacqua’s maternal relatives were Democrats from New England at the time Thomas Jefferson founded the Party.
