Want to See More Hiking Trails in Trumbull?
Nonprofits, municipalities and tribal governments can apply for Dept. of Energy and Environmental Protection's Recreational Trails Grant.

Would you like to see more hiking trails in town? Let your town officials know that Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is now accepting proposals for Connecticut’s Recreational Trails Program Grants. Applications are being accepted through July 1, 2015. Any private nonprofit organization, municipality, state department and/or tribal government can apply for the grant.
According to the CT DEEP, Connecticut Recreational Trails Program funds can be requested for the following purposes:
- Construction of new trails
- Maintenance and restoration of existing recreational trails
- Access to trails by persons with disabilities.
- Purchase and lease of trail construction and maintenance equipment.
- Acquisition of land or easements for a trail, or for trail corridors.
- Operation of educational programs to promote safety and environmental protection as related to recreational trails.
- Planning and design of trails (depending on availability and source of funds).
Previous grant award winners include the Ellington Conservation Commission who received $4,800 to build a boardwalk on the Hockanum River Trail. Goodwin College received $220,468 for expansion of and improvements to South Meadow Trails system. East Hampton and CT State Parks received $400,000 for the extension of the Air Line State Park Trail.
