Bond Set At $2 Million In Vernon Motel 6 Murder Case

The initial $5 million bond was reduced to $2 million in a Vernon motel murder case, but the defendant remained in custody Tuesday morning.

VERNON, CT — A man accused of killing a Vernon motel owner in an argument that began over a $10 swimming pool pass remained in custody Tuesday morning on a $2 million bond.

Alvin Waugh was arraigned on murder and several other charges Monday in Rockville Superior Court and the initial $5 million bond was reduced. He failed to post the $2 million, however, and his due back in court on July 30, judicial system records indicate.

The 31-year-old Waugh has a listed Hartford address, but had been staying at the Vernon Motel 6 with his girlfriend for about a month, according to case records. On Sunday afternoon, an argument broke out over a $10 surcharge hotel owner Zeshan Chaudhry wanted to impose to use the pool, according to case records.

Case records indicate the couple was going t0 be thrown out of the hotel. Waugh is accused of leaving the pool area during the argument, returning with a gun, arguing with Chaudhry again and then shooting him several times, according to case records.

Waugh ran to a wooded area nearby, but then called his girlfriend, talked to officers, and agreed to return, according to court documents.

Police said the shooting was captured on surveillance equipment and Waugh confessed to the killing,

Children were in the general area when the shooting took place, police said.

Chaudhry, 30 of Vernon, was transported to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

Waugh has been charged with:

  • Murder
  • The criminal use of a weapon
  • The use of firearm in a Class A, B or C felony
  • Carrying a firearm without a permit
  • Tampering with physical evidence
  • First-degree reckless endangerment
  • Risk of injury

The Vernon Police Department Detective Division, along with the State Police Eastern Major Crimes Unit and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, are investigating the shooting.
