VERNON, CT — Connecticut Water Company officials are warning Vernon residents about an imposter posing as a utility employee.

The incident was reported this week by a resident on Terrace Drive. Both the police and Connecticut Water officials are investigating.

Connecticut Water spokesman Daniel Meaney said that two men posing as Connecticut Water employees apparently visited at least one residence, saying they needed to check water pressure and the water meter.

"They were not our employees and we encouraged the customer to call Vernon PD," Meaney said.

Meaney said Connecticut Water urges customers to be "cautious" and not allow anyone into their homes who represents himself or herself as a utility worker without first verifying an identity as a company employee.

All Connecticut Water employees carry photo IDs, drive vehicles marked with our logo, and will "happily show" an ID, Meaney said.

"Beyond that, our industry leading program, "Be Sure Before You Open the Door," uses automated features of our customer information system to help protect our customers who have work scheduled at their property," Meaney said. "An e-mail reminder is sent the day before an
appointment and another email with a photo of our employee sent when the employee is on their way to a scheduled appointment. Customers see the employee's photo and can have confidence that the person at the door is from Connecticut Water."

Meaney added that, if someone knocks on a door without an appointment, customers should be
extra vigilant and call the Connecticut Water customer service department at 1.800.286.5700 to verify it is an employees.

"If something doesn’t feel right, don’t hesitate to call the police and report the incident," he said.
