VERNON, CT — A crash at a Route 83 gas station in Vernon Monday morning left a set of pumps knocked over like a football tackling dummy.

The crash took place at about 11:15 at 520 Talcottville Road. That's the Shell station at the corner of state Route 83 and Regan Road.

A set of pumps could be seen in a prone position at the station, a victim of a wayward vehicle that apparently back into it, police said. The station layout requires a parallel parking maneuver to get alongside the pumps.

The gas pump system "did its job," police said, and automatically shut down on impact with just about 1 gallon spilled. Firefighters sanded the area and the state Department of Energy and Environmental protection arrived at the scene shortly after the crash.

Police said the driver cooperated at the scene and no charges had been filed. The vehicle had "minimal" damage, according to a preliminary report.
