Why she is special: My mother and father are the inspiration for a program I originated called Hands Touching Hearts. It’s a global outreach effort that gives Americans of all ages the opportunity to decorate handcrafted keepsakes for United States military personnel. The thank-you gifts are distributed free of charge to active-duty service members, reservists and veterans. Throughout their lives, my parents reached out to family, friends, neighbors, and strangers. They showed me that a compassionate heart manifests itself through the work of loving hands.
