Jesus, Atheists Back In Vernon For 2020 — At Social Distances

VERNON, CT — Visits with Santa had to take a hiatus this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, but that didn't stop two other seasonal accoutrements from showing up in Vernon's Central Park for 2020.

Jesus and the atheists were back for a peaceful co-existence in the shadows of town hall. They are normally joined by the Santa House, but town officials opted for caution amid the pandemic and photo ops with Mr. and Mrs. Claus were suspended for this year.

The monuments to different beliefs and practices have popped up in December for the past several years, usually just after the annual Winterfest celebration. They are part of an all-inclusive display policy adopted by the Vernon Town Council in 2007.

Local Christian groups traditionally place a manger scene with Mary, Joseph, the baby Jesus and, as the Bible tells us, the stable they used for shelter when all the Bethlehem inns were booked during a chaotic regional census commissioned by the Roman Empire governor.

The Connecticut Valley Atheists have traditionally erected a sign referring to displays on public lands that reads, "Keep America Secular."

A Christmas tree and a large wreath hanging from Town Hall are also on display.

The displays were easily 6 feet apart from each other.
