VERNON, CT — It's officially leaf season in Vernon and town officials have released the particulars of the 2020 leaf collection program.

Leaf collection will begin Nov. 2. All leaves should be raked to the curb by that date to ensure collection.

Residents are advised not be alarmed if they you see Department of Public Works crews out the week before that date. They are currently testing the vacuum equipment and training temporary leaf laborers

All streets in the Town of Vernon have been divided into three groups. They can be viewed here.

Group A streets will be collected first and completed before leaf crews move on to Group B streets and so on. The program is dependent on weather. Under good conditions, we expect to complete a group of streets in one to two weeks. Rain, snow or freezing temperatures will delay the program.

All streets are guaranteed at least one pass. If time permits, DPW crews will make a second pass. Residents are at their own risk whether to wait for a second pass or bag their leaves.

Residents should not rake leaves into the street or onto the sidewalk. Officials said it's a safety and flooding hazard as well as a violation of Ordinance No. 235, Sec. 7-20 and is punishable by a fine of $100.

Two of the town's leaf bins opened Oct. 2. They are located at The Church
Street parking area and at Legion Field (off Regan Road at rear of parking lot).

The NYE St. leaf bin is closed until further notice.

Bins are for leaves only. "Contamination caused by disposal of any other type of yard waste will result in leaf bins being shut down, officials said.

Plastic bags need to be emptied. Lawn-sized paper bags are recyclable and do not need to be emptied.

Bagged leaves cannot be put out for collection with regular trash. A pickup for bagged leaves
may be scheduled for the first two Fridays in December by calling the Public Works Office at
860-870-3500. Both biodegradable paper bags and plastic lawn & leaf bags will be
collected.
